Important Update BNPL regulation changed on 15 July 2026.

From 15 July 2026, qualifying Deferred Payment Credit agreements provided by third-party lenders became regulated credit agreements in the UK.

This means customers using services such as Klarna Pay in 3, Klarna Pay in 30 Days, Clearpay and qualifying PayPal BNPL products now benefit from additional regulatory protections for agreements entered into on or after 15 July 2026.

Regulated lenders have obligations around supporting customers experiencing financial difficulty.

Eligible complaints can be escalated to the Financial Ombudsman Service where applicable.

05 Section 75

Section 75 protection may apply to qualifying purchases where the legal requirements are met.

Does COW charge BNPL fees?

COW does not add a fee simply because you choose an available BNPL payment method.

Your agreement is with the credit provider and their own terms apply. Clearpay, for example, may charge late fees if scheduled payments are missed.

Refunds

Returning something?

Once an eligible refund has been approved and processed by COW, it is sent back through the original payment method.

Where BNPL was used, the provider will update the credit plan in accordance with its own terms. This may include adjusting future payments or refunding amounts already paid.

Exchanges

Want something different?

Where applicable, exchanges may need to be handled as a return followed by a new order.

What is Klarna?

Klarna is a credit provider that may allow eligible customers to spread or defer the cost of a purchase. Available options at COW may include Pay in 3 and Pay in 30 Days.

How does Klarna Pay in 3 work?

Pay in 3 divides an eligible purchase into three payments. Klarna will show you the payment amounts and scheduled dates before you enter into the agreement.

How does Klarna Pay in 30 Days work?

Pay in 30 Days allows eligible customers to make their purchase and pay the balance by the due date provided by Klarna. Always check the information supplied by Klarna for the exact terms applying to your agreement.

Is Klarna regulated in the UK?

Yes. From 15 July 2026, qualifying Klarna Pay in 3 and Pay in 30 Days agreements became regulated Deferred Payment Credit agreements in the UK.

Agreements entered into before 15 July 2026 remain subject to the regulatory framework that applied when they were entered into.

Does Klarna check whether I can afford it?

Klarna is responsible for assessing applications. Under the regulatory framework applying from 15 July 2026, regulated Deferred Payment Credit lenders must undertake proportionate creditworthiness and affordability assessments.

Does Klarna carry out a credit check?

Klarna may use information from Credit Reference Agencies and other information when assessing eligibility and affordability.

The exact checks and any effect on your credit file depend on Klarna’s current processes and the product you apply for.

Can missed Klarna payments affect my credit?

Missing payments may affect your future ability to obtain credit or make borrowing more difficult or expensive. Payment information may also be shared with Credit Reference Agencies in accordance with Klarna’s terms and applicable law.

Where can I manage my Klarna payments?

Your Klarna account or app allows you to view applicable payment information and manage your Klarna purchases.

What happens if I return something bought with Klarna?

Once COW processes an eligible refund, Klarna will update your agreement as appropriate. Depending on your plan and what has already been paid, this may involve adjusting or cancelling remaining payments or refunding money already collected.

What should I do if I'm struggling to make a Klarna payment?

Contact Klarna as soon as possible. Regulated lenders have obligations to appropriately support customers experiencing financial difficulty.

What is Clearpay?

Clearpay is a credit provider that allows eligible customers to split a purchase into four interest-free instalments over six weeks.

How does Clearpay Pay in 4 work?

Clearpay divides your purchase into four instalments, normally with payments due every two weeks. Your exact repayment schedule will be provided by Clearpay.

Is Clearpay regulated?

Yes. Clearpay Plans entered into from 15 July 2026 are regulated credit agreements under the applicable UK consumer credit framework.

Agreements entered into before 15 July 2026 remain subject to the framework that applied when the agreement was entered into.

Does Clearpay carry out affordability checks?

Yes. Clearpay assesses applications and may use creditworthiness and affordability information as part of its responsible lending process.

Does Clearpay charge interest?

Clearpay's standard Pay in 4 plan is interest-free. However, late fees can apply if scheduled payments are missed.

What are Clearpay's late fees?

Clearpay currently states that a £6 late fee applies if a scheduled payment is missed, with a further £6 fee if that payment remains unpaid seven days later.

Clearpay states that late fees are capped at £6 for orders under £24, and for orders over £24 are capped at the lower of £24 or 25% of the order value.

Always check Clearpay's current terms as fees and conditions may change.

Can Clearpay affect my credit?

Clearpay states that missed payments may be reported to Credit Reference Agencies. This could affect your ability to access credit in future or make borrowing more expensive.

Where do I manage my Clearpay plan?

Use the Clearpay app or your Clearpay account online to view your payment schedule and the options currently available for managing your account.

What happens if I return an order paid with Clearpay?

Once an eligible refund has been processed by COW, Clearpay will update the relevant plan. Future instalments may be adjusted or cancelled and amounts already paid may be refunded where appropriate.

What should I do if I can't afford a Clearpay payment?

Does PayPal offer Pay in 3?

PayPal may offer Pay in 3 to eligible UK customers on qualifying purchases. Availability and approval are determined by PayPal.

Is PayPal Pay in 3 regulated?

Yes. Qualifying PayPal Pay in 3 agreements entered into from 15 July 2026 are regulated credit agreements.

Does PayPal charge late fees on Pay in 3?

PayPal's current UK Pay in 3 terms state that it does not charge default fees if it is unable to collect a repayment.

Missing payments can still have serious consequences, so always check PayPal's current agreement and contact PayPal if you are experiencing payment difficulties.

Can missed PayPal Pay in 3 payments affect my credit?

Yes. PayPal states that missing payments may make other borrowing more difficult or expensive and that missed payments can be reported to Credit Reference Agencies.

How do refunds work with PayPal?

We send eligible refunds back through your original PayPal payment method. Where a PayPal credit product was used, PayPal will deal with the corresponding credit agreement and repayments in accordance with its terms.

Does Section 75 apply to PayPal Pay in 3?

For qualifying PayPal Pay in 3 agreements entered into from 15 July 2026, Section 75 protection may apply where the legal requirements are met.

Section 75 generally applies to qualifying purchases where the cash price of an individual item or service is more than £100 and no more than £30,000.
